About Sloan Montgomery
Texas artisan plaster since 1997
Sloan Montgomery is an Austin-based craftsperson team that’s exceptionally skilled in the design & application of custom plaster finishes.
Our clients are builders, designers, architects, and homeowners who wish to enhance interior and exterior spaces with substantive, hand-wrought surfaces. We formulate and source integral-color lime, gypsum, clay, and cement-based plasters, honing them to great effect.
Traditional ornamental and decorative techniques–moldings, scagliola, gilding and restoration–are also in our wheelhouse.
Sloan Houser, founder
Sloan’s interest in the traditional building arts began in the late 1980s. On his way home from a day of dispassionate paralegal work in Washington, DC, he spotted a crew restoring a Victorian home. A week later, he was on the team.
After learning the ropes of restoration and decorative painting, Sloan began restoring scagliola (fine plaster facsimile of marble) at the Jefferson Hotel in Richmond, VA, and found his passion. He enrolled in an intensive program studying scagliola and marmorino plaster at the European Centre for Heritage Crafts in Venice. After finishing the course, he moved back to Texas to start his plaster business, Sloan Montgomery.
Sloan has been honored to work on phenomenal projects with some of Austin’s finest builders, architects, and designers, and with national clients as well. Plaster is just as exciting to him now as it has always been. “There’s that mystery of what it’s going to look like,” he says. “It’s a natural product that breathes, and it has texture and life. Plaster is a beautiful aesthetic.”
Working with Sloan is always exciting. His professionalism and extensive knowledge of craft are unsurpassed. His work always raises our projects to a higher level.
